Artists Of Hoot - Noor Anand & Karan Kapoor
The dynamic duo- Karan Kapoor and Noor Anand, two final-year students from Shivaji College and Ramjas College respectively have independently published their novel this February. It's titled The Dreaming Reality, and they'd been working upon it since the last 4 years. They even earned the money to publish the book themselves by becoming teachers and taught English to students.
If they seem familiar to you, you're not mistaken. They put up little stalls of their book at cultural festivals of colleges in Delhi and NCR this year. Probably, you might even have read their book.
We had a talk with these two young novelists regarding their journey. We asked them that at such a young age, what was it that drove the two of them to pen down and then publish a book?
Noor replied, “Once in our games period in school, we were playing badminton. We used to play badminton in every games period. Then we thought for how long are we gonna play badminton? We just wanted to do something greater than ourselves, something which will stay even when we won't. I remember us thinking about improbable, crazy stupid stuff like planning the biggest bank robbery, or discovering a new element, or inventing the greatest most extraordinary machine ever built.
Karan added, “Then, we thought of making a movie. But it was irrational because we didn't have any money. Then, we thought we should write a book. There was nothing that would cost: the sets were free, the actors only costed our thoughts, and we were the directors. We just needed a pen and our school diaries to begin.” They started writing the book on the first day of 12th standard.
On being asked what was the literary mantra behind writing the novel they wrote, Karan said, "Our motive is to challenge the form of novel by fusing multiple genres in one work, incorporating new literary techniques—narrative as well as descriptive—while learning from masters like F. Scott Fitzgerald, Charles Bukowski, Haruki Murakami, Alexander Pope, Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare, Sylvia Plath, and others.”
In their biographical note, the authors describe themselves as polar opposites, ideologically and personality-wise. We figured it would have been difficult for two such individuals to come together and write a book. But Noor said, “Yes, lot of times, we've come to blows for a single word. But the very fact that we were two people ensured that we were able to finish writing the book.” He continued, “If it were I alone, or he alone, it wouldn't have been possible to produce this novel."
"And more than 1400 people should not have bought it in less than a month and a half of its release,” Karan added, laughing.
Lastly, we asked the authors, according to them what makes their novel, The dreaming Reality, different from others?
“The writing style is the USP," Noor replied. “Our book is witty, creative, and cinematic,” said Karan. Noor concluded by saying, “Our message is of happiness. We believe that the world is growing miserable by the day, and The Dreaming Reality tries to defy that.”
