Here are 6 female street artists who are knocking some socks off with not just breaking the social barriers through graffities and paintings, but, also establishing themselves on a pedestal over taken by the men in this field, too.

Graffiti paintings until an epoch were seen and considered as a rebellious and seditious form of art. Today communities supporting art and artists, have helped in bringing this art out from the dark dungeons to broad light. Graffiti artists are coming in spot light and painting at festivals like NH7 weekender and Hornbill and becoming part of artists supportive campaigns.

1. Anpu Varkey

She is trained as a painter and widely famous for her signature cat-themed murals. In 2014, she created the 158 feet tall mural of Mahatma Gandhi at the Delhi Police Headquarters in collaboration with German graffiti artists, Hendrik Beikirch. Since then she has been working over painting large friezes around Delhi. Anpu published her first graphic novel, Jaba, which takes a ghoulish look into a day in the life of her cat.

2. Jheel Goradia

Amalgamating digital art with street art, Jheel is a Bombay based graffiti artist. Taking stereotypical Bollywood objectification of women under her command, she started a project called, “Breaking the silence”, talking about gender injustice and depiction of women in Indian cinema. Her artwork is supported by the head-hitting dialogues shunning the sexist comments used for women by male chauvinists. Gender inequality, rape, prostitution, eve-teasing and LGBTQ rights are some of the themes, she worked on.

3. Leena Kejriwal

She is an installation artist and a photographer, who has worked under the French cultural exchange program. She has her installation in cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Trehan, Berlin and Weimar. Since some time, she has been working with numerous NGOs working on the issues of Human trafficking and prostitution. “M.I.S.S.I.N.G”, is one of her major projects combining art, technology and activism.

4. Kajal Singh

From being a painter, a beauty and fitness blogger and a hip- hop dancer, Kajal is India’s first female graffiti artist. Her writing seldom focuses on developing her signature “Dizy”, which she incorporates into the wall-filling graffiti art. Her art covers the spaces from railway bridges to sides of city-dwellers’ properties.

5. Rush

Rush is a graffiti artist belonging from Manipal. She has been painting since 2010. Graffiti art gives her a rush to create and play with colors and therefore she named herself “RUSH”. She has covered walls of IIT, Hauz Khas, ISBT flyover and Chanakyapuri. Her work comprises of vibrant colors, although, her love for pink is quite visible. She says, visibility and the condition of the walls are the deciding factors of a graffiti artist.

6. Lady Karma

From drawing, painting, printmaking, street art to digital imagination, Karma has a sleight of hands over all of the above. She has helped in the transformation of the slum areas like khirki extension. She with other one or two graffiti artists and with the help of youth workers has given the dull walls of the village a vibrant change.
